What is condensate water and how does it generate?

Condensate water or (sometimes also includes liquid hydrocarbon mixture) is generated, due to temperature dropping, during the cooling process. In natural gas field, condensate water normally refer to liquid water, sometimes including gas condensate, transformed from gas itself when the temperature drops or pressure decrease.

The formation of condensate water mainly depends on the principle of saturated vapor pressure and dew point temperature:

1. Temperature Drops: Vapor in the gas will reach a saturation point, start to form liquid water when gas temperature drops to its water dew point.
2. Pressure Change: When gas be transported to pass through like a throttle valve, pressure suddenly decreases as well as temperature does, it will also lead to vapor condensation.
3. Component Influence: if gas conclude heavy hydrocarbon (C5+), which could possibly transform into gas condensate first, then mixed with water to form condensate liquid.

Connections points where it is easy to generate condensate water:

1. Well mouth and transportation: gas in stratum normally includes water, since the surface temperature is lower than it is in stratum, so when gas be taken out, it will generate condensate water.
2. Compressing and cooling stage: the temperature will increase when gas is compressed, and decrease when it pass through cooling system, in this two stage, it will generate condensate water.
3. Throttling and pressure reduction: gas will absorb heat to swell when pressure suddenly decrease (normally it is found at city pressure adjusting station).
4. Low temperature treatment: before deep cooling (-162℃), condensate water need to be removed thoroughly, or the water will form ice and then block its equipment.

Condensate water will corrode pipeline, block pipeline-related equipment, lower gas combustion efficiency, etc. so it is import to remove it by using 3F’s custom stainless steel filter element.
