After water purifier installed, we normally judge the quality of produced water by using conductivity meter or TDS data, but what need to be reminded is: eligible TDS data does not necessarily mean health water, TDS is not as important as you imagine. So today we are going to talk about TOC, COD among other indexes and what harm would bring about if these indexes exceeds.
TDS (Total Dissolved Solids)
TDS indicates how many milligram of dissolved solids are in 1 liter water. These dissolved solids mainly consist of Ca2+, Mg2+, Na+ and K+.
COD (Chemical Oxygen Demand)
Wastewater, industrial effluent and humus in water are main reason why COD excesses.
The Threats to Health:
- Immunity reduction
- Impact on fertility
- Lead to cancer
- Interfere nervous system
TOC (Total Organic Carbon)
TOC exceeding the limits indicates that a great deal of bacteria, virus, antibacterial, chemical pesticide and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons exist in water.
The threats to health: vomition, diarrhea, liver and gall damage, nervous and immunity system damage.
Chroma
Chroma exceeding its limits is caused by colored matters and suspended particles which mainly comes from soil, rotten plants, metallic elements like iron, manganese and copper, and various industrial effluents.
Threats to Health: colored matters themselves do not have specific harm to health, but its chlorinated by-products such as haloform that is harmful. The influences to human are different by polluted colored water which cause by various contaminants.
Turbidity
Turbidity exceeding its limits indicates large amount of suspended colloidal substance existing in water, e.g.: iron-exceeded underground water would become dark brown meanwhile be smelly when it come above.
Threats to Heath: Drinking water like this would lead to poor appetite, vomition, fever, sweatiness, ache and lassitude. Over-absorbed iron which deposits in liver, pancreas and lymph gland would cause cirrhosis, diabetes mellitus and cancer.
